"This study is concerned with the chain of islands in western Polynesia which form the Kingdom of Tonga. Scattered over some 450 miles of ocean from 'Ata in the south to Niuafo'ou in the north the 150 islands of the group have a land area of only 256 square miles, and in 1962 supported a population of 68,000. There are no minerals, the Kingdom's only natural resources are the soil and the surrounding reefs and seas, and the economy is overwhelmingly agricultural"--Introduction.
