"During the first twenty-four hours after the tsunami the island remained totally isolated due to the destruction of the telecommunications system, and because of the rocks and rubble the waves had strewn across the airstrip making it impossible for a plane to land. The following accounts are those individuals who were either caught up in the tsunami themselves or became involved in the immediate relief efforts during those crucial twenty-four hours whilst the island waited for outside help to arrive."
