Sennit is braided cordage formed by plaiting several strands of pulu'i niu (coconut husk) fibres. Called kafa, it has many uses in the Pacific. It can be used to lash materials together instead of nails. Kafa can also tie and hold up ta'ovala (waistmat). The pulu'i niu has been made to form a strand, which is braided using a fili lautolu (three-ply braid) technique. The braids are plaited into long strips, these are then used to weave or chain plait this kafa. Each end is finished off in a three-ply or four-ply plait.

There are three lengths of braided kafa. Two lengths are tighter than the third. The two tighter lengths are almost square in cross section and have two rows of outward facing links. The third is more freeform.
