520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. "Tonga’s coastal fisheries are diverse, encompassing a wide range of fishing practices and species. From reef and pelagic fish to spiny rock lobsters and sea cucumbers, our coastal waters are a vital source of food and livelihood. The special management area (SMA) approach empowers local communities to manage their coastal resources effectively, with the Ministry of Fisheries providing the necessary support and guidance. This collaborative effort is essential for achieving sustainable coastal fisheries management. In the face of growing challenges to our coastal fisheries, this SMA strategy emerges as a critical guide for the Community Development and Advisory Section (CDAS), relevant government staff, and our esteemed partners and donors. The strategy articulates the processes, activities, criteria, and standards necessary to achieve and sustain community-based coastal fisheries management through SMAs in Tonga"--Foreword.
