N2  - "The main aim of this thesis is to discuss the interaction between western education forms and processes and 'ulungaanga faka-Tonga, Tongan culture. It argues that current educational aspirations held by Tongan people in Tonga and Tongan migrant communities elsewhere have been shaped by the particular socio-culture and political contexts in which they have developed. Accordingly, the historical literature on the development of western education and its interaction with traditional forms and concepts of education, is reviewed. Tonga's incorporation into the global economy which encouraged increasing numbers of Tongans to migrate to New Zealand and other Western countries in the pursuit of economic and educational opportunities, is also discussed"-Abstract
