Journal of Sarah Joiner Lyman who traveled on the whaling ship "Averick" bound for the Sandwich Islands as a missionary with the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in Hilo, on the Island of Hawaii. The book contains additional information about the Lyman family. Her record of earthquakes (1833-1861) constitutes the earliest scientific record known on the Island of Hawaii.
