The major aim of the study was to: gather reliable data to inform its plan to undertake a national educational campaign to help reduce the prevalence of diabetes. A nation-wide quantitative study and qualitative fono were conducted by the University of the South Pacific Tonga campus. The national survey included a randomly selected sample of 1501 participants between the ages of 14 and 25 years, a qualitative fono with a purposely selected sample of 214 young people, and case studies of six young people with Type 2 diabetes. The survey reveals that youths in Tonga are surrounded by people who have diabetes, particularly in their churches. 87% have a church member with diabetes. This was more so in Vava'u where an overwhelming 97% have a church member with diabetes. In everyday life, a third of Tongan youths live with a family member who has diabetes, and also have extended family members that have diabetes"--Executive summary ER -
